Japan Disaster
On Friday March 11, 2011, a massive magnitude 9.0 earthquake hit Japan. It was located off the east coast of Tohoku, Japan at a depth of 24.4 km (15.2 miles). The magnitude makes it the largest earthquake to hit Japan in recorded history and the 7th largest in the world since records began.
Although the earthquake caused massive destruction, the tsunami that followed devastated entire cities.
It has now been over a year since the quake and 19,000 people are dead or have not been accounted for.
Over 500,000 people and over 100,000 children have been displaced. Since the earthquake and tsunami occurred during a weekday children were in school and many parents were at home and work. As a result many parents did not return to retrieve their children.
